Why do some people dream more than others?

I dream alot and regularly wake up remembering my dreams in great detail, but some people hardly ever remember dreams.
Have any studies been done on why some people dream more than others? Does it mean anything?

i wish i could find the study to prove it. but if it helps, my psychology lecturers have confirmed that this is a myth. everyone dreams, it's just that some remember their dreams and some don't - so it seems that certain people dream more than others.

there are exercises that one could do to start remembering dreams - for example, to keep a notebook by your bed and write down every recollection that you have. or to stay in bed without moving for 10 minutes when you wake up, instead of immediately getting out of bed. this will help your mind to focus in a calm environment.

For more than a quarter of a century, Pat Schneider has helped writers find and liberate their true voices. She has taught all kinds--the award winning, the struggling, and those who have been silenced by poverty and hardship. Her innovative methods have worked in classrooms from elementary to graduate level, in jail cells and public housing projects, in convents and seminaries, in youth at-risk programs, and with groups of the terminally ill. Now, in Writing Alone and with Others, Schneider`s acclaimed methods are available in a single, well-organized, and highly readable volume. The first part of the book guides the reader through the perils of the solitary writing life: fear, writer`s block, and the bad habits of the internal critic. In the second section, Schneider describes the Amherst Writers and Artists workshop method, widely used across the U.S. and abroad. Chapters on fiction and poetry address matters of technique and point to further resources, while more than a hundred writing exercises offer specific ways to jumpstart the blocked and stretch the rut-stuck. Schneider`s innovative teaching method will refresh the experienced writer and encourage the beginner. Her book is the essential owner`s manual for the writer`s voice.

In East Berlin in 1984, the secret police, known as the Stasi, are gaining more and more control, spying on German citizens, and recruiting thousands of them to spy on each other. Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich M?he) has been ordered to find something on playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch), so he sets up a surveillance room and listens closely as Dreyman, his actress girlfriend, Christa-Marie Sieland (Martina Gedeck), and various suspected radical friends gather in their apartment. But when Wiesler discovers that culture minister Bruno Hempf (Thomas Thieme) cast suspicion on Dreyman only so he can have his way with Sieland, the master interrogator and torture teacher starts taking a long look at just what it all is about. THE LIVES OF OTHERS, cowritten and directed by first-timer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, is a tense, compelling thriller about a critical time in German history. M?he is mesmerizing as the complicated Wiesler, a loyal soldier until he learns too much. The wildly talented Koch is outstanding as Dreyman, a man with a lot to say but desperate to avoid the same fate as his mentor, theater director Albert Jerska (Volkmar Kleinert). Inspired by actual events and real characters, THE LIVES OF OTHERS was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007. Interestingly, during and after the filming of the movie, several of the actors (including M?he) found out that they or their families had been victims of the Stasi--and in one case, the father of an actor (Charly Hubner) was revealed to have been a member of the Stasi himself.

Carnacki, Supernatural Detective and Others

One of the few lateVictorian writers of the supernatural who remains popular and is frequently reprinted today, William Hope Hodgson might be surprised to learn that his work has stood the test of time, because he had not achieved great critical or popular success during his own lifetime. Some of his longer works were not reprinted in America until the 1940s, while Hodgson, during his early life, served in the merchant marine (both adventurously and heroically), and in later life, volunteered for the Royal Field Artillery during the first World War. Hodgsons years at sea fueled his interest in both the supernatural and in seatales, which make up the majority of the stories in Carnacki, Supernatural Detective and Others, an excellent companion volume to the six Carnacki stories collected in Carnacki the GhostFinder. One of the nonnautical tales is Eloi Eloi Lama Sabachthani, which tells the eerie tale of Baumoff, a German scientist whose explosives inspire much curiosity, even as his supernaturallycharged death mirrors the Passion of Christ in all but one small, horrific detail. Hodgsons supernatural/scientific detective Carnacki could easily be thought of as the original Ghostbuster. Each of Carnackis tales involves twists both supernatural and pseudoscientific. Carnackis electric pentacle has caught many an eldritch spirit. Other stories of note include The Hog, in which Carnacki confronts a swinish demonspirit haunting his patient Bains dreams, and The Derelict, a sea tale of creeping unease featuring mysterious oceanic visitors who may have more in common with fungi than with human beings. Those who have enjoyed Hodgsons longer works including TheNight Land and Boats of the Glen Carrig will enjoy each one of the stories in Carnacki, Supernatural Detective and Others. The Grief of Others (Paperback)

The Grief of Others (Paperback)

$24.94

The Ryries have suffered a loss: the death of a baby just fifty-seven hours after his birth. Without words to express their grief, the parents, John and Ricky, try to return to their previous lives. Struggling to regain a semblance of normalcy for themselves and for their two older children, they find themselves pretending not only that little has changed, but that their marriage, their family, have always been intact. Yet in the aftermath of the baby`s death, long-suppressed uncertainties about their relationship come roiling to the surface. A dreadful secret emerges with reverberations that reach far into their past and threaten their future. The couple`s children, ten-year-old Biscuit and thirteen-year-old Paul, responding to the unnamed tensions around them, begin to act out in exquisitely?perhaps courageously?idiosyncratic ways. But as the four family members scatter into private, isolating grief, an unexpected visitor arrives, and they all find themselves growing more alert to the sadness and burdens of others?to the grief that is part of every human life but that also carries within it the power to draw us together. Moving, psychologically acute, and gorgeously written, The Grief of Others asks how we balance personal autonomy with the intimacy of relationships, how we balance private decisions with the obligations of belonging to a family, and how we take measure of our own sorrows in a world rife with suffering. This novel shows how one family, by finally allowing itself to experience the shared quality of grief, is able to rekindle tenderness and hope.

Why Some Politicians Are More Dangerous to Your Health Than Others (Hardcover)

Why Some Politicians Are More Dangerous to Your Health Than Others (Hardcover)

$25.13

Politicians and the political process, even in ostensibly democratic countries, can be deadly. James Gilligan has discovered a devastating truth that has been "hiding in plain sight" for the past century - namely, that when America`s conservative party, the Republicans, have gained the presidency, the country has repeatedly suffered from epidemics of violent death. Rates of both suicide and homicide have sky-rocketed. The reasons are all too obvious: rates of every form of social and economic distress, inequality and loss - unemployment, recessions, poverty, bankruptcy, homelessness also ballooned to epidemic proportions. When that has happened, those in the population who were most vulnerable have "snapped", with tragic consequences for everyone. These epidemics of lethal violence have then remained at epidemic levels until the more liberal party, the Democrats, regained the White House and dramatically reduced the amount of deadly violence by diminishing the magnitude of the economic distress that had been causing it. This pattern has been documented since 1900, when the US government first began compiling vital statistics on a yearly basis, and yet it has not been noticed by anyone until now except with regard to suicide in the UK and Australia, where a similar pattern has been described. This book is a path-breaking account of a phenomenon that has implications for every country that presumes to call itself democratic, civilized and humane, and for all those citizens, voters and political thinkers who would like to help their country move in that direction.
