Headshot hair and makeup help/advice?

I'm having some pro photos done for fun although they style is like actors headshots. I need a bit of help with hair and makeup. The location is not near any shops or salons so that is out the window. (40 mins away)

I think i need 'natural' makeup. So i guess base, blush, mascara and lip gloss??
My skin is combination and blotchy. How do i get a flawless base?

Also what hair is best for heashots? Do people tie it up or leave it loose?

As for the makeup, I would suggest going to a department store with a makeup section and have the people there do your makeup and ask them to explain the steps as they go. My mom took me to Belk for my 18th birthday (which also happened to be a week or so before my senior portraits were done), and my makeup was beautiful not only that day, but also the day of my portraits, prom, and graduation! I have terrible skin, and not only did I feel absolutely beautiful after, not a single blemish or blotch could be seen. If you have a department store nearby your home or just a little off-route to the photographer and you have an afternoon appointment, you could even go to the store before you have to leave for your appointment with your photographer. Department store makeup will usually stay fresh for a long time (mine stayed fresh for the whole day), so you probably won't have to do too much touching-up later. The only drawback to going to a department store is that you're expected to buy something, since they work on commission.

If you don't want to deal with that, then find a non-oily, dermatologist-approved foundation that matches the tone of your neck and chest. I had heard for years that you're supposed to match it to the inside of your wrist, but that colour is too pale on 95% of women. Since your face is closest to your neck and chest, matching to that colour will be the most natural looking. I also suggest using concealers to help cover any imperfections. Green will help cover red spots, and yellowish colours will help cover any dark circles under your eyes.

You'll want to accentuate your eyes a little with very natural colour eyeshadows and a very light layer of eyeliner. Choose a mascara that is darker (preferably black, brown, or black-brown, depending on your skin tone and eye colour).

You'll want to choose a very natural blush. Stay away from bright pinks and reds because they'll probably make you look like you've got a severe case of windburn. I suggest a light pink or a coral. For a sun-kissed look, brush some bronzer over your face where the sun would naturally hit you, but be careful to not make your face look like you've just spent too long in a tanning booth.

As for lip gloss, I wouldn't choose something that is really, really glossy. Actually, I'd just stick with a quick brush of Chapstick. If your lips are unevenly coloured because of cracks and peeling from winter, choose a very natural lip colour with a little bit of moisturizer.

Here's a link to Carmindy's website (she's the wonderful makeup artist for What Not To Wear), and she's got some great tips on there:

For your hair, make it look pretty. You'll want it to look healthy, but not greasy. If you're going to dye or cut your hair, do it about two weeks in advance. This way, your hair will have a chance to fade a little and grow out some before your photo. I'd suggest wearing your hair down as it will make your forehead look smaller and it can do a lot in playing up your face, but just make sure your hair isn't getting into your face. You can pin back the sides (you'll want to play with your hair a few days before and take pictures of the styles you like so you can refer back to them later). If you have natural curls, flaunt them! Curls are beautiful and coveted in anyone, especially actors (trust me, I've got natural Shirley Temple ringlets), but make sure you use the proper products to enhance those curls. Here's what I like to use and in the order:
~TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Shampoo and Conditioner
~Special Effects Silk Drops Hair Serum (just a tiny dab will get rid of frizzies in ANY hair type)
~Pantene Pro-V Volume Mousse
~TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Curl Booster Spray
~Finish off with doing some hand-scrunching, let dry for a few minutes (usually while applying makeup), then use a diffuser on a hair dryer to help pump up those curls!

For when I want to do straight hair, I use:
~Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Shampoo and Conditioner (it has a lavender lid)
~Special Effects Silk Drops Hair Serum (Again, just a small dab will do wonderfully)
~Pantene Pro-V Volume Mousse
~Blow-dry with a large round brush
~Straighten using preferably a ceramic or glass straightener. You can also use a metal straightener, but you're more likely to get frizzies.
~Finish it off with spraying some hairspray on your brush, then brushing your hair. This will create the hold you need while still allowing your hair to move naturally.

Here's the link to Nick Arrojo's website (also from What Not To Wear) on how to achieve different looks:

Good luck, and have fun!
