Goal Post

By extending the goal post by a foot, do you think soccer will be much more interesting sport?
There will be more goals and the game will be much more exciting. This hypothesis was presented by an ex Real-Madrid goalkeeper!
it would sure be interesting, but i think it's not a very smart idea.. it would be way too hard for goal keepers and easier to score from farther back in the field. i think enough goals are scored as it is.

Who Moved the Goal Posts
Last month we discussed the issue of "The winning is in the picking" as far as the success of the team is concerned. The selection process must create a situation that allows the coach or team leader to select the correct team members and also to allow the potential team member the opportunity to select the correct team.
OK, the selection process is great. We have selected what we think is the right team member, and the team member selected, what they believed is the correct team for them. We work through twelve months and all of a sudden it hits us. That what the team thought they were getting and what has happened slowly over the past twelve months are two different things. What we needed from a team member in this position and what our team member is delivering are two different things.
Now we get into the area and question of, 'What does this person bring to the team?' And this is a question I have probably asked myself everyday of my coaching career. You see as time goes on people and situations change. First and foremost we need to understand why if our selection process was what it should be and we selected the correct team member, that they are now failing to deliver what we believe the team requires.
There are a myriad of answers to each individual situation but in my experience as a general concept the three reasons why roles do not get fulfilled are these:
1. The team member doesn't fully understand their role.
2. The team member doesn't understand the significance of them fulfilling their role. The impact of them fulfilling their role has upon them, the team and the organization.
3. They are too lazy.
Many years ago my coaching mentor Bill Sweetenham said to me"Whenever someone does something always ask yourself, why?" I think this is a perfect scenario for that question. A person we believed at the time was a great fit, for the team and it's needs, but for some reason what we thought we were getting and what is reality are two totally different things.
The first question should be. Have they changed or have we? The results of that search will probably find a little of both. At times we have a tendency to move in a different direction and the skills of the team member are no longer a strength in line with that particular direction. Sometimes we move the direction of the team and it is done in a way that team members don't know or understand.
Many times when I discuss issues with members of different teams one particular statement continually arises. "The goal posts keep moving. We never know what direction we are heading and we don't know what is expected of us!"
Therefore, confusion reigns supreme. The team leader can't understand why the team members are not doing what they thought there were capable of. The team members are confused because they have no idea from one day to the next what it is they are supposed to be doing and why.
Now, I have no problem with the goal posts moving, in fact if they don't move we are probably going to be left behind by the competition. Nevertheless, you just cannot move them and expect others to see that and realise and understand why. The philosophy and concept behind the move is critical in the acceptance of the move by the members of the team. The input by the team members into the move and the best way to instigate the move is critical. The key issues in the successful instigation of moving the goal posts is communication and of conceptual acceptance.
The team members must understand the concept and philosophy behind the move. They must have had a degree of input into the move and the reasons behind it. The success of the move is not necessarily dependant upon the concept behind the move, but more so on the acceptance and preparedness of the team to instigate and to follow through on the change of direction.
A good team will allow change to take place if it is implemented in the correct way. However even a good team only has so much to give and if the goal posts keep shifting on a regular basis with no real sense of direction or reason, then even a good team will lose faith in the team leader and their ability to lead.
So, if the goal posts have to be moved, then move them. However, make sure the team has discussed the issue and they know the reasons why. They understand their role in instigating the change and the significance of them fulfilling that role. And they understand the benefits to them, to the team and to the organisation of the goals posts being moved.
