What is a fair up-front deposit when paying to have a desk custom-built? Also, should I have a contract?
I'm having a desk custom built. It's pretty simple, so the guy gave me a quote of $275 for labor and $40-60 for materials. We are meeting at Home Depot to pick out the wood and everything, so I figured it makes sense for me to go ahead and pay for that. He's taking all the materials to his own work space, so that's kind of a deposit in its own right. Should I also offer to pay a percentage of the labor cost up-front, or should the whole $275 be paid after he delivers and assembles the desk completely? Should we make a contract before any monetary exchange takes place, or is that not really what people usually do?
This is my first time getting anything custom-built, so I just want to make sure everything is being dealt with fairly. I just don't know what's customary in the independent-contracting carpenter profession. Thanks!
So, who should pay for materials up-front?
This sounds awful cheap. I would be careful about paying for anything. The way I look at it is - it's his wood and labor until he produces the finished product. That's what you are paying for - the finished desk.
I would write up a simple contract that states the specs for the desk such as Height to the top of the desk,width,length. Species of wood, number of drawers, hardware, and the quality of the wood finishing.
Example:
I agree to pay John Doe a total of $275 for labor and $60 for materials to construct a desk 48" long x 29"deep and 30" high. The desk is to have one center drawer 20" long and 4" high, and 3 side drawers 12" wide x 8" high and 16" deep, all with matching pulls. The species of wood is to be birch. The desk is to have a smooth furniture like finish with a polyurethane semi-gloss finish.
Payment in full will be made upon delivery of this desk and it's completion as described above.
