Fries Food Neon
Why did my Silver/Bala Sharks die? Could they die from eating platy's fry?
Went away for two days over Christmas. Left 2 Tetramin food sticks in the tank to provide food for the 2 sharks, 4 platys, 7 neon tetras, and 1 danio. Came back home after two days to find one shark dead and one stuck in a plant still breathing but very much at deaths door. I euthanised the shark that was still alive. All the other fish in the tank are fine, no problems. Tank is approx 120 UK litres. Two things I did notice which may be important points. At least one platy spawned as I have counted 4 fry in the tank. I don't know how many eggs they spawn at one time and we missed that particular 'show' while we were away. One of the sharks belly's appeared to be orange, but not an external injury, it looked to be something internal or some kind of bruising (but orange). A longshot, but could the sharks have been helping themselves to hundreds of fry (if the platys spawn so many) and basically overfed or poisened themselves? A few days later the other fish are still fine.
Platies do not spawn - they are livebearers. They could not have produced enough young in two days for your sharks to overeat.
I would guess inadequate filtration to handle the food sticks - is the water cloudy? The sharks are more sensitive than your other fish to poor water quality. Or it could be that you had temperature fluctuations - did the power go out while you were away?
Also, how long have you had the sharks? The "bruising" you describe could be the symptoms of disease that they have only just now died from.

My Aquarium, Fishies and Fries (Part 1)
Help 1 of my fish had babies an i dont know which kind and i dont know what to do?
I know that they arent supposed to be in with substrate and they shouldnt be in with other fish cause they'll get eaten so i moved them to an empty but cycled tank. There is about 20 of them.
The only fish that were in the tank where they were born were
3 balloon mollies
3 guppys (supposedly all male)
3 neons
2 glofish
Do the babies (fry) eat regular food?
female guppys are not gray and if they are balloon mollies then shouldnt they look like them?
I would say it is guppy fry or Molly fry as they are the only live bearers in your tank.
I haven't had experience with Molly's but if any of your guppys have a dark spot just before the belly reaches the tail then you have a female....they are usually quite a bit larger than the males so she would be easy to pick out....
I think it is quite a bit harder to tell the sex of the mollies.
The fry will be fine on crushed up flakes. Just crush your flakes into an almost powder form and sprinkle a little into your fry tank.
It may not look like they are eating it but try not to over feed them.
