Those aren't enough to get you in overall great shape, the exercises you listed aren't going to work your whole body or anything close to it. Basically I think you're each about half right? He is correct that you need to do a lot of different workouts, work different muscles, etc to get really jacked/ripped. But you don't have to go to a gym for that at all, you just need to add in different exercises so you're strengthening more muscle groups.
