Family Reunion
Going to a family reunion whats a good dish to bring?
My husband family is of amish decent and the family reunion is usually outdoors (in amish country) I notice that every year, his relative brings casseroles..what is a good and different dish I can bring and not offend anyone. Thanks
Amish Macaroni Salad -- Tip: gradually add the sugar, it's a little sweet for some with all of it.
INGREDIENTS
2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni
3 hard-cooked eggs, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
1 small red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
2 tablespoons dill pickle relish
2 cups creamy salad dressing (e.g. Miracle Whip)
3 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
3/4 cup white sugar
2 1/4 teaspoons white vinegar
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon celery seed
DIRECTIONS
Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add macaroni, and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until tender. Drain, and set aside to cool.
In a large bowl, stir together the eggs, onion, celery, red pepper, and relish. In a small bowl, stir together the salad dressing, mustard, white sugar, vinegar, salt and celery seed. Pour over the vegetables, and stir in macaroni until well blended. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

Amish Potato Salad --Tip: Again, some people find this too sweet, so gradually add the sugar
INGREDIENTS
6 medium white potatoes with skin
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped carrots
1 teaspoon celery seed
4 hard-cooked eggs, peeled and chopped
2 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing
DIRECTIONS
Place the potatoes into a large pot, and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook for about 20 minutes, or until easily pierced with a fork. Drain, and set aside to cool.
While the potatoes are cooking, whisk together 2 eggs, sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a saucepan. Stir in the vinegar, milk, and mustard. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until thickened, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in the butter. Refrigerate until cool, then stir in the mayonnaise.
Peel the potatoes if desired, and cut into medium dice. Place in a large bowl, and toss with the onion, celery, carrots, celery seed and hard-cooked eggs. Gently fold in the dressing. Refrigerate until serving. I personally like this to sit for at least a day before serving to let the flavors blend, but you may serve it as soon as it is chilled.

INGREDIENTS
2 cups raisins
2 cups water
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1 pinch salt
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single crust pie
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Line a pan with half the pastry and chill.
Place the raisins and 2/3 cup of the water in a saucepan and heat over medium heat for 5 minutes.
Combine the sugars, cornstarch, spices, and salt in a bowl and , mixing all the time, slowly add the remaining water. Add this mixture to the heating raisins. Cook and stir this until the mixture starts to bubble. Add the vinegar and butter and heat until the butter is melted. Cool until just warm.
Pour into the prepared shell and top with the second crust. Bake 25 minutes or until golden. Cool.

family reunion?
i want to start a family reunion this summer. we have never had one before, this will be the first time, and we all live far from each other. does anyone out there have any ideals or suggestions on how to put one togather and what has gone over good at some of your reunions.
The most difficult task may be to settle on a date when most/all the family members are available. Start sending e-mails and/or snail-mail to get suggestions for a date. Once a date is settled on, send everyone and invitation.
Figure out who will stay where and find out rates of local motels/hotels. Maybe you can get group rates.
Plan on doing most of the cooking; invite family members to bring dishes. Provide the beverages, chips...
Have games for the kids & adults (volleyball, baseball...). Have playing cards, boards games available...
Rent a place or have it at your home. Provide everyone with directions.
You could center foods and decorations on a theme [october Fest, Blueberry Bonanza...].
Provide music - invite others to bring favorite CDs.
Have a TV available (or two) for those who aren't into the back yard games (or would still rather watch foodball). Don't be offended -- often family members, who haven't seen each other in a long time, or who don't know each other, will "bond" in front of the TV set.
Perhaps you should plan your first one late in the summer unless everyone decides earlier is best. And, be sure airline reservations can be made -- some holiday weekends are busy.

Find out if there are any special diets that need to be looked out for (i.e., some people may be allergic to peanuts, strawberries, etc.). Food may need to be labeled, or those people warned.
Let family members know ASAP that you are planning this - some may need to plan their vacations around it (some may only be able to afford one trip).
[Edit] Forgive me = I thought of a few more things. They may be in the articles, at About.com, but I haven't read those (I looked them up for you).
You might want to have napkins engraved (printed) this "First Annual (name) Family Reunion" and the date, as a keepsake. And/or create another keepsake for each person.
Have a Guest Book for everyone to sign (if they want). That will be your Keepsake and quite a memento.
Rain alternatives. If you plan activities outdoors and it rains, what are you going to do? Maybe you can have a park pavilion, lounge, church, on "standby", in case. (Call ahead and make arrangements.)
Rent tent(s), tables, chairs, beverage coolers. Companies will set up the tents for you, I believe, and deliver the tables & chairs. (And disassemble & pick up.)
Buy ice or make plenty well in advance. Know where you can buy ice if you run out. (If you need extra refrigerator/freezer space - for foods, ice - maybe neighbors/friends will help out.)
Are you going to let singles bring dates or "significant others"? RSVPs will be important when you sent out your invitations. (Include a self-addressed stamped envelope, if you can, for replies.)
Warn the neighbors that there will be noise, cars, activities going on that day.
Will you need extra parking? (Or) need help picking up people at the airport? Friends neighbors may help out. Perhaps, neighbors will allow you to use their driveways for the day.
Have plenty of film/cards for cameras/digital cameras, and batteries. Camcorders and tape?
Collect internet addresses to allow you (and others) to send photos and correspond easily - before and after the reunion.
ESTABLISH A WEBSITE - like Yahoo 360 or MSN Spaces - to communicate before and after the reunion. Only allow family members to access it. You can share photos there too.
Talk up the next re-union (who and where).
Have dishes and wrap for guests to take leftovers (home or to the motel rooms).
Hire a DJ or Band? You might have enough to do and people will want quiet to talk - but the option is there. DJs can be a great ice-breaker for an hour or two - especially if family members don't know each other well (or at all).
Tie balloons on the mailbox (or something that says "this is the house!"). You might put that (say, balloons) on keepsake napkins, if you have them.
Any babies or children who will need naps? Have places where they can lie down.
It sounds like a lot. But remember, it's your first and it is so terrific you're taking the initiative to put it together. Even if it's a flop or only twelve people can make it, it's the first and you'll have more chances to out-do yourself. Under NO circumstances think of it as a failure.
Take your times and do what you can. Simple is most likely best on a first reunion. So, decide what is most important and start there -- work out (from there), as you have time. Take time to breathe and relax!!
