THE ABBASIDES - THE PERIOD OF AGGRANDISEMENT

The Abbasides - The Period Of Aggrandisement

The closing chapter of the house of Omayya may fitly be reckoned as the opening chapter of the book on the Abbasides, for the rise of the new dynasty synchronised with the collapse of the older one. We may thus begin with the reign of Merwan II, the last of the Khalifs of the Omayyad Empire, during which his vast dominions from east to west were plunged into strife and confusion, while the partisans of the Hashimites successfully pursed a systematic series of revolutionary conspiracies to complete the overthrow of the established Omayyad Government, restoring to treasonable methods and sending fanatic missionaries to scatter broadcast the seed of hatred and aversion throughout Khorasan, Persia, Syria and Iraq.

But it should be borne in mind that with the change of dynasty there occurred no remarkable change in the Arab rule, as such, at least for another century. From a national point of view it mattered little whether the sceptre of the Arab sovereignty was held by the Omayyads, or by their rivals, the Abbasides. They were cousins the offspring of the same progenitor, Abd-i-Manaf, and they both were Modharites by race. The dynastic change was but the inevitable outcome of the clannish hatred between the Hashimites and the Omayyads, that culminated in the outrageous murder of Hzt. Usman whose Omayyad kinsmen, as a body, arrayed themselves against the Hashimites and led, at a subsequent date, to the tragic end of Hzt. Imam Hussain. From this sprang the inveterate hostility of the Hashimites against the Omayyads.

The feuds so far were political in their nature, but they assumed a religious character
after the bloody battle of Siffin, and subsequently that of Karbala. The great schism was
complete after the barbarous treatment of Imam Hussain by the abominable son of Ziyad Obaidullah, the governor of Kufa. However, the dynastic change had no effect on the Arab domination itself. Though the unity of the Khilafat, by the vanishing of the house of Omayya at Damascus, was at an end forever, and the western Muslims of North Africa and of Spain created a separate Khilafat for themselves, yet all the lands, once conquered by them, remained under the Arab sway for centuries after.

Islamic civilisation made progress by the leaps and bounds. No other people in Asia or in Europe could vie with the Muslims in any respect. They were far ahead of all their contemporary races in the then known quarters of the world. Relics of their marvellous architecture in Spain, Syria and the East. Astonishing details of their canals, roads, and stages. Glowing accounts of their admirable civil and military administration wonderful descriptions of their irresistible army and formidable navy. Vivid pictures of the attainments in human arts and handicrafts, and of their keenness in the advancement of science and literature. Lastly the exhaustive accounts in voluminous books of their faithful service to their religion survive as an undying testimony to their physical, mental, moral and spiritual culture.

The Abbasides supplanted the Omayyads, but the Quraishite domination remained intact and continued with increasing grandeur and growing splendour.

The family feuds of the descendants of Abd-i-Manaf, aggravated by the more ancient tribal dissensions between the Himyarites and the Ismailites, only eliminated the personnel but not the materiel of the Arab government. The change of hands in no way created any hindrance in their scheme for national ascendancy.

Under the early Abbasides, the machinery of government was brought to perfection and the Arab civilisation was raised to its highest pitch. But the subsequent predominance of the Persian and Turkish elements marked the disappearance of the pure Arab rule, and led to the loss of the Arab prestige and the gradual decay of the orthodox spirit in religion.

In the Omayyad days the reins of government were held exclusively by the conquering classes, and the conquered people were only admitted to subordinate services, a practice not dissimilar to that adopted by European powers outside Europe for the last two centuries in order to safeguard their national interests. But during the Abbasid regime, as the seat of the Khilafat was shifted from Damascus to Baghdad, a serious political, the Arabs were brought in closer contact with the Persians, which forced the rulers to modify their old policy of exclusion. They could not be but remove the barriers that had so long stood between the ruling race and the ruled. They could not help throwing open the gates of civil as well as military service to their subject races without any distinction.
