Why do drug stores make sick people walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescription?
Why do drug stores make sick people walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescription, but smokers can get their cigarettes up front? Shouldn't it be the other way around...
That's an excellent question. Unfortunately I cannot provide you with a solid answer, but only speculation.
First, it would be logical to put the pharmacy in the vicinity of the other drugs which are available on shelves. However, putting the shelved drugs up front is a poor choice due to their high frequency of theft. The best solution would be to place it all in the back, and work under the assumption that the sick are able enough to gather a prescription or they would be in the hospital for treatment. I do believe that the rate of theft would be more frequent than the number of sick people unable to walk to the back of the store for their drugs.
Cigarettes on the other hand, would be in the front of the store for advertising purposes. It is a hefty industry, and as such they have the money to fork out for that kind of recognition. Cigarette companies actually bid for their placement in stores, and so it is natural they would be in the front. There is also a correlation with cigarettes increasing overall sales in stores. People come to buy a pack of cigarettes, and end up with other products as well. In that sense, it is also logical for them to put cigarettes in the front of their store.
In the end, it's all about money.
