Cut One Tin
the volume of a box, math question.?
The Volume, V=lwh.
A topless box is to be made from a square sheet of tin by cutting 5-inch squares from each of the four corners and then shaping the tin into an open box by turning up the sides. If the box is to hold 480 cubic inches, find the size of the piece of tin to be used.
can anyone figure this out? We did one kind of like it in class but, yet, it's unable to help me on this one.
xy=96. but x equals some length with 5 inches taken out from each side (actually 10) as does y. so (x-10)(y-10)=96. now, just assume that both sides are equal to each other so its actually (x-10)(x-10)=96. then you have x^2-20x+100=96. now just solve this simple quadratic equation. i hope that helps. keep in mind that if you use the quadratic eqn you have to set one side to zero. so that you can solve x^2-20x+4 for its roots and that should be it.

Tinned tomatoes; a welcome port in a winter storm
I love to support local sustainable food and I make a decision around every item I buy at the supermarket. I consider first of all if I need it or how badly I want it, where it comes from and the seasonality of the food. For me eating produce out of season is not only hard on the environment on many different levels it also means you are always getting inferior product. For example – regardless of how desperate you are for a bite of summer the oversized strawberry you pay through the nose for in March is never as good as the small juice ripe berry you will enjoy in July...never. For me tomatoes are one thing I struggle with most of the year. I love them, in salads or sauces – raw or cooked there is something about the sweet acidity of a tomato that I crave. In the winter when the tomatoes are dry, under ripe and tasteless, I tend to avoid them choosing to get my tomato fix mostly from a can. But the quality of tinned tomatoes varies as well. I've tried tons of them from the cheapest to the most expensive and in the case of tomatoes, the old adage bares truth – you really do get what you pay for. For my money the best tinned tomato is the San Marzano – a gem of a tomato from Italy packed ripe in natural juices make them the perfect choice for any dish that requires cooked tomatoes. Less expensive tinned tomatoes have salt & citric acid added which indicates the tomatoes were not fully ripe when they were processed making them inherently inferior from the second they went into the can. Another great trick to boost up the flavour of winter/spring tomatoes is to oven roast them – hot house cherry and roma tomatoes seem to work best for me. Cut the tomatoes in half and place them cut side up on a baking sheet. Sprinkle over a small amount of sugar and salt. Roast the tomatoes in a 250 degree oven for about 1 ½ hours (more if the tomatoes are larger) – the low roasting will reduce the juices, the sugar will caramelize to sweeten the tomatoes and the salt will intensify the tomatoes flavour. You aren't looking for oven dried tomatoes here rather a soft tomato that you could still chill and serve in a salad or on a sandwich. Try them both, the San Marzano and the oven roasted tomatoes are both delicious and might change the way you think about adding tomatoes to a meal this spring.
