ntldr missing what should i do? Computer shuts down halfway through repair?
I tried to restore my computer with a repair disk for xp but halfway through the repair the computer shuts down every time. I had to do a repair since the other day when I restarted it said checking drive clusters and shut down halfway through. After that the computer restarted and the computer would go the xp logo and then shut off after flashing a blue screen. Now the computer when I start it says NTLDR is missing press control alt delete to restart. Is the hard drive failing? I only have the hp repair disk no windows xp disk. Computer is HP Pavilion 4540US. Don't know what to do? Should I buy a new hard drive. I tried installing linux (Unbuntu 7.04) to see if that would work but it restarts when trying to install to hard drive. Thanks for your help.
ntldr missing is a bad master boot record problem. ntldr is the file that tells windows what you have installed on your PC hardware wise. Get the name and model of your hard drive. Have a friend go to the hard drive maker and if possible, download thier diagnostic software, These usually come in floppy or CD bootable versions. Boot you PC to one of these and see if it can fix the drive for you. Many hard drive comapnies have these utilities.
