College Team

what are my chances of making a college tennis team?
i have played for 5 years and i think i have a lot of natural talent in it. I am tall which i think helps and very in shape i played junior varsity and varsity and won states 3 years in row. I have also won 5 tournaments and am an avid player at the Rochester tennis club could i get into a college team?
College tennis teams are not all the same. Some are national contenders, others don't qualify for national tournaments [usually in May] at all. Here is a web site devoted to college tennis recruiting:
http://www.tennisrecruiting.net/
When you say you "won states," does that mean your high school won a state championship?
Were the five tournaments you won USTA sanctioned events at the "open" level of junior play?
Coaches who award scholarships are very interested in *rankings.* If you've never had a ranking, that would make it more difficult to get into a Division 1 school. If you find a place you think you'd like to go to, write a letter to the coach asking to come and visit. This way, you'll meet some of the guys and hopefully get an idea of how strong they are and whether or not you might start for their team. Get to know the coach as much as you can, since you may be spending a lot of time with him.
Get yourself a copy of the book below by USTA. It has a lot of valuable information for you on this topic:
"USTA Guide to Tennis on College Campuses," United States Tennis Association.
http://www.ustashop.com/USTA_Books_s/4004.htm
http://www.ncaa.com/sports/tennis-men/d1
http://www.ncaa.com/sports/tennis-men/d2
http://www.ncaa.com/sports/tennis-men/d3
Division 1 is where the "money" is, but it's tough to get into, since the best players from all over the world who are not touring pro's make up the talent pool.
Division 2 also has scholarships, just not as many as Division 1.
Division 3 does not allow athletic scholarships at all.
With your experience, I'm sure there are a number of schools where you could play. The question is, will you fit into the team and start in your first or second year? If not, maybe it's a good idea to look at other schools, unless you're in love with a certain school and you don't mind giving up playing intercollegiate tennis.
Playing college tennis takes up a LOT of time. Everybody knows this, and if you play all four years somewhere, then you will be defined as a tennis jock. If that isn't a problem, great.
The thing is, tennis usually does *not* prepare you for earning a good living. It is largely a pretty useless skill. Being successful as a coach is also very difficult. I should caution you that one of my teammates indicated that [years later] he wished that he had worked on something OTHER than tennis during his undergraduate years. At the very least, try to find something to fall back on [for earning a living] in case tennis doesn't work out for you.
Many community colleges also have tennis teams, if you want to stay close to home during your first year after high school:
http://www.njcaa.org/
Another option is "club" tennis, which is not as intense as intercollegiate tennis:
http://www.tennisoncampus.com/site3.aspx
Sportsmanship might not be #1, but it's way ahead of whatever is in 2nd place.
Best wishes

College $14.6 Rated: NRSynopsis: The silent comedy feature College stars Buster Keaton as a scholarly young man who doesn't know beans about sports. When he arrives in college, Buster finds that all the Big Men on Campus are jocks. To impress pretty coed Anne Cornwall, Buster tries and fails to join all the school teams. Even when he attempts to take a job at the campus soda fountain, Buster is a washout. Through the kindness of dean Snitz Edwards, Keaton is placed on the varsity rowing team where, despite several clumsy moments, he manages to win the big race. This infuriates his athletic rival Harold Goodwin, who seizes Cornwall and runs off with her. In racing to her rescue, Buster is compelled to repeat all the sports activities at which he'd previously failed--and does so, magnificently. He bursts into Goodwin's dorm room and saves Cornwall from the usual worse-than-death fate. Hero and heroine kiss--at which point this lighthearted film takes a sudden, chilling turn. As always, Buster Keaton performs his own stunts in College, except for the pole-vaulting bit, which was accomplished by Olympic champ Lee Barnes. College Basketball: Beginnings
Basketball is a game wherein two teams composed of five players each try to score against one another by shooting a ball through a hoop raised three (3) meters above the ground. The hoop is also known as the goal, and basketball athletes develop the necessary skills needed to propel the ball through the hoop. Each team has a goal, on opposite ends of the court, which the opposing team tries to shoot the ball into. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. Both college basketball and professional leagues generally follow the same basic rules.
People have enjoyed playing the game of basketball from the time it was first played. Indeed, in the United States, college basketball has gained quite a following nationwide. Now, with the immense popularity of the NBA and its superstars, many students are looking to get noticed in college basketball recruiting, to play in college teams and even perhaps in the NBA.
In 1891, Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick Jr., then superintendent of physical education at the International YMCA Training School (which is now Springfield College), gave a young, Dr. James Naismith, the task of creating a new indoor game that could easy to play in the winter and by artificial light. Naismith puzzled over this, and examined the popular games of the day. He also remembered the games he played during his childhood, one of which was called "duck on a rock". Eventually he came up with a few rules to guide a game that would be caled Basket Ball. It wasn’t until 30 years later that the term got shortened to one word.
Because Naismith wanted a non-violent game that could be played inside, the first seven rules consist of set guidelines for play, with scoring not even mentioned until the eighth rule. Though the rules have been modified over time, the essential principles remain constant. The original rules were published in The Triangle, the International YMCA Training School newspaper, on January 15, 1892. Each team during those early years had nine players, which soon became the standard. It would take ten years for the five-players-per-team rule to become the norm.
The Internet has proven to be a useful venue for both students in college basketball and coaches involved in the process of college basketball recruiting. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact. D1Athletes is an online community wherein high school athletes and coaches alike can share and exchange information they need during college basketball recruiting. D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure.
