How do I make coffee bean beads?
I really want to make a necklace for my sister, and I've seen these coffee bean beads all over the internet. I was wondering how to make them particularly how to waterproof them to prevent them from bleeding onto clothes.
Although I have never made them, I have made beads of other materials and the process may be worth the effort--why not give it a try!
Here are my suggestions--Buy th coffee beans (they are kind of small) and you can probably get them at the super market. Leave them out to dry, or ake them in a slow oven (275-degrees, maybe) to extract some of the oil. Don't them them burn; keep your eye on them. Remove from oven and cool. With a fine drill bit and electric drill (the Dremel-like handheld model) drill a hole on the desired spot. Go slowly and steadily. My guess is too much hand/drill pressure will break the bean...go gingerly until you get the hang of it. Use a fine drill bit that will allow your string/thread/elastic pass through easily. Then string as desired. As far as coating them, you may need to wait until they are strung and coat them with either a glossy (triple-thick) spray or use clear nail polish with a brush.
Like I said, I am sort of guessing, but I have used other materials in this way. Your idea has got me thinking and I may even give it a try myself!
