How do I help my dog to feel better?
My 8 month old jack russell bitch was spayed at 2 o'clock today. I realise that she will still be groggy and uncomfortable. However since bringing her home she has not stopped whinning, it seems that she is still in a lot of pain (understandable). She was not sent home with any pain medication. She has had a little bit of water and probably needs the toilet by now, but as she has not stood up yet what is the best way to deal with this? I have tried to start to move her but she gets very distressed.
You've gotten some pretty good advice so far. Call the vet with any questions, she's still woozy, let her rest etc.
Some vets don't send dogs home with pain meds, just antibotics. The incision is usually small and the dog is still a little drugged from the surgery.
Many dogs are more stoic than people when it comes to pain. There are vets that will not prescribe pain meds because you don't want the dog to feel "too good" post surgery. Meaning, if the dog feels good, she will be too active and may injure herself and tear her stitches. If she is a little sore, she will sleep and rest and recover faster.
I'm not sure I agree with this in practice but I understand the theory. You don't want you dog feeling great the day after surgery and wanting to go back to normal activity. Jacks are bouncy to begin with!
Keep an eye on her and call the vet with any questions. Make sure you give her all the medications that they prescribed and keep her from too much activity. Normally 2 - 3 days of leash walks only. Let your vet give you the specifics - no us.
Hang in there. She'll be fine. It just takes a little time. You are doing a good job keeping an eye on her.
