Business Sign Marquee
Why do gas stations advertise prices on a prominent marquee?
What other business has large signs with the price of what they sell? Coffee shops? Dentists? Grocery stores (orange juice is $3.39 a gallon!).
I've seen this in every country I've been to, whether or not gas prices are set by the gov't.
Some suggest that it's obvious: so you can see the price. But there's more here. It would also be nice to know if milk is cheaper at Safeway or Kroger, or if Nikes are better at Foot Locker. Does Verizon have a storefront marquee with their bundled service prices? No, besides gas stations, no other store has a huge sign outside tracking every price change. And it's like this in other countries: even when there's no competition, each service station has a huge sign declaring that gas is 349 kopecks per bushel, or whatever.
There's more here: why is it accepted and expected to display fuel prices?
duh. so you can see the price from your car. you can stop or move on. it's just simple advertising.
