Legendary Leader Calls New Industry Trend "Bottle Rocket" Network Marketing
Mark Yarnell, a 24 year leader in the Network Marketing profession and author of the bestselling "Your First Year in Network Marketing", has some words of advice for MLM distributors and is not afraid to share it.
While being interviewed in his home in British Columbia, Yarnell spoke of two different ways he's noticed network marketing organizations are being built today. As the love affair between network marketing and the internet grows, Yarnell points to a trend he calls "Bottle Rocket" networking. This happens when a network marketing leader with a large downline or email list moves his or her team from new company to newer company, building excitement with each prelaunch, and making considerable income when everyone signs up.
"The connectivity that's so beautiful about the Internet is that you can reach so many people in a hurry," Yarnell explains, "and so people become aware of these new companies… and they get involved. Some of them make money, some of them don't, and then they move on to the next one and that company usually implodes or goes under."
As co-creator of the only Network Marketing Certification Program (University of Illinois at Chicago), Yarnell opens his students' eyes to this trend. "What I say to my classes is that if you like Vegas, you'll love these 'Bottle Rockets.' You just light the fuse. You don't know where they're going or when they're going to explode. You know they're going into the air, it's exciting. It goes up and explodes, and then you find another fuse to light."
Instead of the "Bottle Rocket", Mark Yarnell strongly advocates network marketing based on sound business principles instead of hype. "I like the long-term, lifetime nature of residual income. What happens is, when people who want a long-term residual income… unwittingly jump in one of these 'Bottle Rockets' and it fails, they're not really prepared emotionally for that."
While not disparaging MLM distributors who use the "Bottle Rocket" method, Yarnell does pose a serious question: "If you want to get to 30, 40, 50 thousand a month… the question you have to ask yourself is, 'Do I want to make that consistently, month after month, for the rest of my life?' In our industry, you can actually work hard for 1-4 years and build a lifetime of residual income. And then you don't have to keep jumping around." "I like Vegas, but I'm not going to tie my retirement to a casino game."
