Bears Walter

Does anyone here know much about Walter Sickert's paintings?
I've read a book by Patricia Cornwell in which she theorizes that Walter Sickert is Jack the Ripper. She states that none of Sickert's paintings evoke positive feelings and that many of them are actually pretty dark. Her book also has an illustration of a painting by him called Putana a Casa, in which there is a woman whose face bears an eerie resemblance to the mutilated face of one of the Ripper's victims. However, I once saw a painting by Sickert showing people bathing in the sea on a sunny day. For me, it actually evoked positive feelings. What do you guys think of Sickert?
Rynbow: I just looked at the pic of Winston Churchill. I think it's sort of cold and blank. Instead of getting a feel for Churchill's personality, one gets the impression that he's sort of staring off into space.
Hi, When Sickert was young, he was a friend of Degas, and possibly also of Toulouse Lautrec. At this time he produced some attractive work, in an impressionist style, lively and rich in texture and in colour. When I first saw these I quite liked them. But Sickert lived through the wrenching transition from fin-de-siecle culture to modernism.
Later on, he started to work from photographs in a harsh way –

These works make me feel very uncomfortable and when I first heard about the theory that he may have been the Ripper, I felt that yes, that could be.
In general artists are nice people, even noble. But there is a kind of person who wants to be an artist, not from love of nature or of people, but for personal ambition, and even for money. These people, I hesitate to call them artists, have a remarkable capacity for evil. Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin all wanted to be artists and failed. Hirst and the other artists of the Saatchi stable are very cruel people, as were Clement Freud and . Jackson Pollock was a nasty drunk, and even Vincent van Gogh attacked Gauguin with a knife. Today apart from those artists who build up a reputation for shock and viciousness, most working in the field are incapable of drawing and produce their images by projecting and tracing photographs. Fine art is as rare now as it has always been.
I haven't read the Cornwell book, but I am rather keen to do so.
