Would anyone like to give me some business advice? Baked good related?

I have recently started my own cupcake company, we sell at food events, markets, etc and some weeks we do really well, and others not so well, our cupcakes look amazing, we do really nice flavours that others cupcake companies don't and we try to think out of the box when we are looking at events. We don't have the funds to buy a shop at the mo, and our start up costs have escalated quite a bit. The advice I would like is how to maximize sales, we have thought abuot buying a coffee machine, but like I said money is short, plus the competition to supply coffee is high. We do other things, like cookies, big cakes, truffles, and some seasonal stuff, which we will be concentrating on over Xmas, and also have tapped into the wedding market and that is all going well at the moment. So anyone got any advice for me? Oh and we went round all the little cafes in town with free cupcakes, and a trade price list, but got nada. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! many thanks in advance.

As you have found sales to the public is good but selling to a business to resell - the cafes in town - is harder.

How are your products packaged and branded?

Maybe get a few friends to go into cafes buy a coffee and ask " Do you have Dominic T's cupcakes.

If they get asked even a few times they will
soon want to know how to stock them.

Also can you include any details of yourself and business on the cakes - especially at the wedding market - lots of people and they have to know about you and your product.

One easy way to do this - is note and keep any details of the happy couple - send a christmas card - anniversary card etc

People do talk about these things and it keeps you in the frame.

Can you hook up with any business that is supplying buffets or platters to offices -
or stay in front - offer this service as well and then sub out the food side.

Creating a package is always worth considering.

Get some news - create a huge cup cake and auction it of for charity.

Home baking is on the increase -

set up a cake competition for kids
they pay a quid or so to enter - donate the cash to a charity.

Gets your name out there.

Many shopping malls will allow space for small businesses to promote themselves.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2009/jul/17/world-largest-cupcake-covent-garden

certainly eye catching.

I guess for display purposes this could be recreated in say polystyrene so that it opens to reveal loads of smaller cakes inside.

Can you do naughty cakes just look at the ann summers web site.

Canine Cakes - a total of £1.7bn was spent last year on food.

Can you do a cake with doggy chocolate and dog friendly
I am amazed now wehn I see folks trawling thru stores and web sites to buy pet stuff -

good idea above offer to bring undecorated cupcakes to kids parties or holiday events and let the kids try their hand at decorating.

But make sure you can include business details that everyone can take away -
How you do this is at the simplest leave some business cards with the organiser. For young children have a colouring in sheet with a big cake just in B&W but have your business details on it too.

Have you thought about accessing any business start up/advisory services - you can check the phone book or council
this is usually free service.

Hip. Cool. Fashion-forward. These aren’t adjectives you’d ordinarily think of applying to baked goods.Think again. Not every baker wants to re-create Grandma’s pound cake or cherry pie. Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito certainly didn’t, when they left their advertising careers behind, pooled their life savings, and opened their dream bakery, Baked, in Brooklyn, New York, a few years back. The visions that danced in their heads were of other, brand-new kinds of confections…Things like a Malt Ball Cake with Milk Chocolate Frosting, which captures the flavor of their favorite Whoppers candies (and ups the ante with a malted milk ball garnish). Things like spicy Chipotle Cheddar Biscuits that really wake up your taste buds at breakfast time. Things like a Sweet and Salty Cake created expressly for adults who are as salt-craving ?as they are sweet-toothed.Which is not to say that Lewis and Poliafito sidestep tradition absolutely. Their Chocolate Pie (whose filling uses Ovaltine) pays loving homage to the classic roadside-diner dessert. Their Baked Brownies will wow even the most discriminating brownie connoisseur. And their Chocolate Chip Cookies? Words cannot describe. Whether trendsetting or tried-and-true, every idea in this book is freshly Baked.

Wilmington NC Dining and Restaurants

Restaurants in Wilmington, NC

On your visit to Wilmington, North Carolina be sure to check out the wide variety of cuisines available from American, Caribbean, Mexican, Italian, French, Asian or Indian food Wilmington’s restaurants have something for everyone.

American cuisine is at its best at places such as Henry's, which serves excellent New York Strip steaks that you can wash down with a drink from their old Brunswick style oak bar. For wonderful burgers and homemade milkshakes, go to University Cubbies and for soups and salads, Water Street is the place to be. Wilson's is a gourmet Tuscan style family restaurant with a jazz bar, a sports bar, an outdoor Caribbean-style café and a gaming room.

Cafe Deluxe is as well known for its original artwork on display as for its entrees like Balsamic BBQ Filet Mignon and Wasabi Tempura Shrimp and the thousand bottles of wine on their list. At Cafe Phoenix you get complimentary bread, olive oil and fresh ground pepper while they prepare your Chevre Stuffed Free Range Chicken Breast and Vegetable Panini dinner. You have the choice of sitting indoors in the restaurant, outside on the balcony or the sidewalk. For Mexican food, especially Southwestern cuisine and fish tacos visit K-38 Baja Grille, while Italian food is at its best at Fat Tonys Italian Pub that also serves 24 draft beers in a fun pub atmosphere (my favorite).

The Downtown Deli has the aroma of fresh baked cookies, homemade root beer, and Boars head meats that it serves. Charley Brownz serves American, Mexican and Italian food along with a number of food and drink specials daily and a Happy Hour Buffet spread where there are unlimited wings and nachos for you. French food at Le Catalan is traditional and their wines are excellent too. The Caprice Bistro serves authentic Bistro style French food, French desserts and wine. Asian food is best had at Indochine where the decor is oriental and takes your breath away.

The Port Land Grille's regional cuisine menu is wonderful as is the seafood at Elijah's and The Naked Kingfish Seafood House and Oyster bar. The exclusive Soho Steak House and the Trails End Steak House offer complimentary hors d'oeuvres while your order of custom aged beef, seasoned vegetables and free range chicken is being prepared.

For pizzas, lasagnas and Penne Arabiatta go to the Pizza Bistro. For a more casual ambience visit Capt'n Bill's Backyard Grill that has a large sports bar with big screen TVs, sand volleyball courts, daily drink specials and a full service menu. But remember, no visit to Wilmington, North Carolina can ever be complete without tasting the traditional North Carolina vinegar-based Barbeque.
