Centennial College: Motorcycle Repair Apprenticeship Program
Work As A Tyre Fitter/repairer
Tyre fitters usually work indoors in workshops, but some companies run a service for customers where they can have tyres changed at their homes.
Job responsibilities
- Check and inspect tyres for signs of damage or wear
- Repair punctures
- Use lifting equipment
- Replace worn tyres and tubes including finding appropriate trims for vehicles
- Remove, fit and adjust wheels
- Check the balance of the tyres and realign if necessary
- Road test the cars
- Carry out stock control and replenish stock when necessary
- Report any problems with equipment
- Keep a record of the time taken to complete jobs
Some large employers e.g. Kwik Fit run apprenticeship schemes which give apprentices two years training with a guaranteed job on completion of NVQ certificate as fast fit technician. During the apprenticeships the training will focus on the following
- Tyres, Battery and Charging systems
- Exhausts
- Steering and Suspension
- Wheel Alignment
Apprentices are assessed both on their practical skills as well as classroom theory work. They will also improve customer service skills and use of numbers and computing. Pay in year one of the apprenticeship is around £112 per week rising to £187 per week in the second year (above the standard rate for apprentices). Employers normally require apprentices to have some GCSEs and they will be aged 18-24, with a driving licence.
The working week is normally over five (8.30 to 5.30pm) days one of which will be worked on Saturday. Working as a tyre fitter normally requires the fitter to purchase their own toolbox which can be very expensive. Some companies will take a certain amount per month from pay to cover the cost of the toolbox, or on completion of the NVQ will refund the cost of it.
The qualities required to be a tyre fitter are: good manual dexterity, good communication skills, good team working skills, a certain degree of numeracy and I.T. skills. Promotion prospects could be to become workshop supervisor/manager, or move to a different area of the automotive trade e.g. work as mechanic or body shop repairer.
