Is Alcohol A Health Drink?
Studies show that consuming alcohol in moderate amounts may be better for your health than not drinking at all. So is alcohol as a health drink?
Researches show that those who drink alcohol moderately have less heart disease and fewer heart attacks and strokes. Those people are also less likely to have hypertension, peripheral artery disease, Alzheimer’s disease and even the common cold.
The Old and New Testament mention the medicinal properties of alcohol. Even in the early 1900s, moderate alcohol consumption was associated with decreasing the risk of heart attacks. Since then, there are continuous research studying on the medical attributes of alcohol.
Tipplers who drink sensibly are said to live longer. Research from Harvard and the Chinese show men who drink have a lower risk of death compared to teetotalers. The average difference ranges from 21 to 28 percent. This longevity is associated with lower risk of coronary heart disease, cancer and respiratory disease. Moderate drinkers had less need for hospitalization.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found that in 20 countries world-wide, those who drink alcohol moderately are 20- 40 percent lless at risk of having coronary heard disease. The abstainers and heavy drinkers have higher mortality rates due to coronary heart disease. Another Harvard study showed that women who drink a half a glass or five grams of alcohol a day lower their risk of coronary heart disease by half.
In addition to decreasing heart disease risk factors, moderate drinking increases the survival rate of heart disease victims. Light to moderate drinking of alcohol during the year before an acute myocardial infarction can lowers the risk of death after. Heart patients having two to four drinks per day after a heart attack are less likely to have a second heart attack. The risk factor for those moderate drinkers is one half of that of abstainers.
An American Heart Association study indicates that light to moderate alcohol consumption can lower the risk of stroke for both men and women, without regard to age and ethnicity. Young adults drinking one to three drinks a day have the lowest levels of hypertension. Abstainers and heavy drinkers are more likely to have Type 2 diabetes compared to moderate drinkers.
Light to moderate drinkers have fewer and are more resistant to common colds compared to non-drinkers. The risk of kidney cancer is lower in the moderate drinker group. The moderate drinkers also have a 27 percent lower risk of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma or cancer compared to abstainers. The list of benefits appears to go on and on. Significant health benefits are derived from alcohol consumption, as long as it is light and moderate.
However, if alcohol is consumed in large doses often, the drinker will have problems. Medical researchers and professionals say 'moderate drinking' means about one to three drinks a day for a man. And moderate drinking for women is 20 to 30 percent less than that. Of course, that's attributed to smaller size and biological differences.
Though the benefits of moderate drinking shown above are noteworthy, all is not good. There are also studies showing the consumption of alcohol, even in moderation, has a higher risk of a certain disease. Studies showed that an average one to two drinks a day can increase can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. Drinking pregnant women can also fall victims to miscarriage. There's also the risk of fetal alcohol syndrome which has negative effects on the nervous system of the unborn child. Cirrhosis of the liver, heart muscle damage and stroke can be had from alcoholic consumption.
So, there are always two sides to a coin. Alcohol can be a drink beneficial to your health. Too much will lead to more sickness than cure.
