Filling out offers that require cell phone number to send activation code?

Hey, two questions about filling out ads that require you to type the activation code that is sent to your cell phone.

1) Can it be harmful such as triggering hidden charges.

2) Is there someway I can receive this text on a computer? Ex. a site that gives you a number to type in and then can receive the text on that site.

You should definitely be wary and read the fine print. However sometimes that won't work either because if it is a scam than more than likely the scammer would have simply copy-pasted without consideration for the law.

My sister last year was scammed in this way. Some website said that it would tell her who her friend liked. It is one of those typical enter-name, get-a-response scams. She typed my father's mobile phone number.
For the next week premium SMSs came in every 2min or so. Our phone bill went into the thousands. Took ages and support from ScamWatch (http://www.scamwatch.gov.au/) to get our money back from our mobile provider.

So be very, very careful.
